With Frames What is Eliza? Eliza started as a demonstration program to explore the limits of Natural Language Processing (NLP), created about 1963 by Joseph Weizenbaum, an MIT professor NLP is one of many branches of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the art and science of building machines that perform tasks requiring intelligence, such as recognizing images, solving problems and, as here, carrying on a conversation with a real human, you! Dr. Weizenbaum had Eliza play the part of a psychoanalyst when conversing with you. She mimics a counselor's behavior well enough to give the illusion that she actually understands. |
No Frames Since her creation, Eliza has been a favorite among programming students and game developers. Although she falls far short of having actual intelligence, she can be an effective eye-opener for many people into the possibilities of NLP and AI. Eliza also serves as an excellent practice set for beginning AI programmers and for exploring the feasibility of a given programming language for developing NLP applications. |
